So, we got not-so-expensive tickets to Mexico... I mean, they were expensive, but considering we bought them in November, to travel just the day before Christmas, the price was actually better that I thought.
I knew we were going to stop at Cabo San Lucas and change planes, but by the time we were planning the trip I thought saving 300 USD for each ticket was worth it.
My beautiful husband was reluctantly accepting that David and I were leaving for the holidays, so his unconscious was trying to avoid the trip by getting up late and then re-checking the already double-checked list of what you are not supposed to take up to the plane... then getting lost twice on the way to the airport, in a car that had a dangerously low level of gas in it.
I don't blame him... I did not want to leave him either. I still wish he could have gone to Mexico with us.
When we finally got to the airport, it was FULL. I should say though, that it was REALLY organized. You still had to go through super long lines, but they were moving so fast, that we had a bit of a problem taking our jackets off, and organizing our stuff to get through security. When I noticed, we were already at the gate. Of course, since it was so late, we could not make it to the ATM, nor buy anything to eat. Inside the boarding area, we tried to buy food, but they only had fruit smoothies and fruit flavored muffins. Of course David almost threw up just by the mention of this kind of snacks, so we had to wait withoug eating anything.
Now, we are there, waiting to board, and they unboard a plane to Phoenix to the same gate. So it's crowded. This made everyone nervous, PLUS we learned our plane was gonna be late, so everyone is just dissapointed, sleepy, nervous and hungry. And this is the time that an America West employee chooses to open an inside door without his code, card, key or whatever, thus starting the most annoying and loud beeping, followed by inexpressive yet imponent words of a male voice: YOU HAVE VIOLATED THE AIRPORT SECURITY STANDARDS. STEP ASIDE AND WAIT FOR OUR CREW TO SPEAK TO YOU... or something like that...
Everybody jumped; you know, being nervous and knowing that the security alert is high, you don't want to hear this kind of message!
A few seconds go by and everyone started to kind of relax after the scare, when the beeping and the voice start to go on again... and then again, and again... and so on for something like 5 minutes. At this point is not terrorism what has us stressed out, but TORTURE!!!
Finally, we boarded the plane.... or should I say the winged mini-van.
Oh, dear, it was such a turbulent flight... my powerful butt was actually separated from the seat on ocassions!. David turned to me at some point, and said: " mom, you look green".
And I was. I was so scared I would have a vertigo attack, that I just had my eyes shut and kept praying and breathing deep. It was awful.
I was glad when the plane landed... but not for long. I got off the plane, and the heat hit me with a hard kick. ARGHHHHHH!
We wandered around the aiport looking for information on what to do next, and after filling the wrong paperwork, and then the correct one, and then being sent to here, there and anywhere, we are ready to eat something... except any restaurant accepts visa, mastercard, or any payment options, but CASH. So, I go all around looking for an ATM, and... SURPRISE!!! it's not working! A man was working on it, so we had to stand there for 30 minutes to wait for it to be fixed, because the other one was like 4 miles away, or so I was told.
Funny thing, I was very inaccurate with the figures in pesos... I thought pesos were worth more! So I take out 200 pesos from the ATM and I get a burger king meal for each of us, and I am left with only 15 pesos!!! That was not what I had planned, but it was time to go to our boarding gate, so I did not stop by the ATM, and we run to the gate.
35 minutes later, I found out this was a mistake... There was not room for a needle there! it was all crowded due to many flights being delayed, and yet, they were still calling people to the boarding area!!! The air was thick, lucky ones were sitting, almost everyone was standing, and I felt like Elaine Bennes trapped in the subway. People beside me were talking with all the bad words you could think of, in each one of their sentences; I was actually wondering how they could get the idea of the conversation, because by the time they finished with the swearing, the few words that were actually informative were just too far away from the previous idea, making the communication process quite complex, and David was opening his eyes wider and wider every time... I don't think it is possible for any of us to be exposed to this amount of profanity EVER AGAIN.
Finally, after 2 hours of waiting and with our feet really sore, we could board the plane. David slept for most of the trip, and I couldn't because there was a lot of turbulence again.
We got to Guadalajara 1 hour late, but everyone was waiting for us, and this made us forget all the incidents of the flights. David left the airport with Fernando and his family, and I went to my mom's house, where a delicious chicken soup and the company of my brother, sister in law, nephew and niece, plus my beautiful mom, made my soul smile again.
This is the end of the very looong story. I think some can use it to go to sleep! ha!
